A spiral performing arts venue where every seat is visually and acoustically unique. Extremely fast configuration changes, patented. Fully engineered. Costed at €52M. The only structurally new entertainment proposal in an active $40B global pipeline.
The VMFT Nautilus is a spiral performing arts venue in which the audience wraps continuously around a central stage — every seat occupying an acoustically optimized position. No proscenium arch. No hierarchy of stalls and circles. All seats turn 360°.
For a century, the fundamental geometry of the performance hall has not changed. Proscenium stages, an acoustic compromise for those in the upper tiers — these structural assumptions have been inherited and reproduced by every venue built since the 1920s.
Designed by Valerio Ferrari, Principal Designer at VMCF Atelier® Architectes, with structural and MEP engineering by SIO, this is not a speculative concept. The engineering is done. The IP is protected. The cost is estimated. What remains is a single decision: which city, developer, or institution will build the first one.
"While traditional theater construction requires massive investment in classic models, the Visual Music Facilities Theater / Nautilus offers the opportunity to pioneer a new typology for a fraction of the cost — securing the intellectual property for a global standard of the future."
Every seat is a front row. Every angle can carry the performance. Every spectator is immersed in the performance.
The Nautilus reorganizes the geometry Western performance has followed and hands artists a new instrument: a spiral the audience inhabits, a sound field that can be sculpted, and a room that can become any room. This is not a venue. It is an invitation to make new work.
A 360° spiral surrounds the source. Every direction is on-axis; every vantage is composed for. The work opens in every direction at once — visible, audible, and felt from every seat.
Each voice and instrument is placed at a precise spatial coordinate, independent of the speakers. A violin's timbre can walk around a stationary audience. A chorus can dissolve into the architecture. Spectators move inside the score.
A continuous LED interior replaces flats and backdrops. Scenography becomes light, perspective, and motion. The work is composed for a room that can become any room.
The Nautilus reconfigures in minutes — concert hall at eight PM, club at one AM, fashion show at eleven PM, conference at two PM, broadcast set at five PM. Every night, the room becomes what the work asks.
Spectators sit on an ascending centripetal spiral, not concentric tiers. Every seat is acoustically and visually alive. Every audience member is seen — and every artist composes for a room that is structurally watching itself watch.
This typology invites artists to invent a new form of work. We are looking for the ones who will.
| — | Innovation | What It Means Commercially | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | Spiral Seating Configuration | Eliminates the acoustic hierarchy that defines every conventional venue. Every ticket is a premium ticket. Pricing power across 100% of seats, not 30%. | Patented |
| 02 | Touchscreen Floor Reconfiguration | One building operates as opera house, concert hall, standing venue, conference, esports arena. Revenue model multiplied without multiplying capital outlay. | Patented IP |
| 03 | Timber Lattice Dome | Low-carbon, seismically efficient, visually iconic. The envelope is the brand — a landmark before the first event. Reduces ESG friction for sovereign and institutional funders. | Engineered · SIO |
| 04 | Full-Surface LED Interior | Immersive display built into the architecture — not a retrofit. Every performance transforms the venue entirely. Differentiator for programming, sponsorship, and media rights. | Built-in |
| 05 | HVAC for Crowd Density | Mechanical engineering calculated for spiral seating density. Crowd comfort modeled and resolved pre-construction. | Modeled |
| 06 | Retrofit Capability | The Nautilus volume inserts into an existing post-industrial structure or a decommissioned aircraft hangar — reducing cost, planning timeline, and political risk. | Cost Advantage |
| Venue | Cost | Typology | Replicable |

Cities are not building theaters for audiences. They are building theaters for identity. Every active project in the $40B global construction pipeline is a variation on proscenium, concert hall, or flexible black box.
The Nautilus proposes a structural departure — with IP, cost estimate, and engineering backing to be credible. The institution that builds it first does not merely acquire a venue. It acquires the position of origin in a global installation network.
The work that typically takes years — and often never gets done — is already complete. What remains is the path from first champion to global installation network.
Design development, permitting, construction, and opening of Installation #1. The retrofit path — inserting the Nautilus volume into an existing structure.
Once operational, Installation #1 unlocks a global program. Each new installation licenses the patented reconfiguration system — generating recurring IP revenue from every subsequent build.
The practice behind the Nautilus has spent over a decade developing a structural thesis on performance space — not as a typological refinement, but as a fundamental reimagining of the relationship between audience, performer, and acoustic envelope.
The engineering is complete. The IP is protected. The financials are structured. The structural and MEP engineering was executed in collaboration with SIO — a firm with deep expertise in performance venue systems. This is a shovel-ready proposition waiting for a single decision.
